Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants consist of surgically positioned titanium posts that serve as artificial tooth roots. Dr. Ego-Osuala places them into your jawbone beneath your gum line before he mounts replacement teeth or a bridge to the posts.

Healthy gums and adequate bone help support your dental implants so they don’t come loose as removable dentures can. The three types of dental implants are:

Endosteal implants

For this, the most common implant procedure, Dr. Ego-Osuala embeds endosteal implants -- root-like titanium screws -- directly into your jawbone, and the surrounding gum and bone tissue heal around the posts. During a second visit, Dr. Ego-Osuala attaches the artificial tooth (prosthesis) to each post. The prostheses can be individual crowns, bridges or dentures, depending on how many teeth were missing.

How are dental implants done?

Regardless of which type of dental implant surgery is right for you, Dr. Ego-Osuala surgically places your implant into or onto your jawbone and healing takes place as the titanium metal attaches to your bone tissue (osseointegration).

Healing often takes several months for the bone to grow around the dental implant and hold it in place. Once this is complete, Dr. Ego-Osuala attaches your permanent replacement teeth onto the posts.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The benefits of dental implants include:

  • Stability: last a lifetime with proper placement and care
  • Look, feel, fit and function like natural teeth: no food restrictions
  • No slipping, clicking, or sagging
  • Protects healthy bone: no jaw bone deterioration due to empty spaces
