Veneers & Lumineers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are shells that cover the front of your teeth and provide strength and flexibility that's similar to natural tooth enamel. Dr. Ego-Osuala uses veneers, typically made of porcelain, to recreate the natural look and brightness of your teeth, correcting discoloration, fractures, and chips.

Using a model provided by Dr. Ego-Osuala, a dental technician custom-makes your veneers at a dental lab. When they’re ready, Dr. Ego-Osuala removes a small amount of enamel from your teeth, making the placement of your veneers an irreversible process.

Veneers are a less intrusive option than both crowns and braces when used to close gaps or correct minor misalignments.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are an ultra-thin, highly translucent type of veneer that replicates the natural appearance of your enamel. Dr. Ego-Osuala doesn’t have to grind down your original tooth structure because Lumineers are much thinner than traditional veneers.

Lumineers fix many aesthetic issues, including:

  • Stains and discoloration
  • Chips
  • Spacing issues and gaps
  • Misalignments
  • Misshapen teeth

After Dr. Ego-Osuala takes photos and an impression of your teeth, he sends them, along with your dental records, to a Lumineers laboratory where it takes a few weeks to create your Lumineers.

When you return, Dr. Ego-Osuala fits the Lumineers to your teeth and checks your bite. He then prepares each tooth and bonds the Lumineers individually.

How do you care for veneers and Lumineers?

After Dr. Ego-Osuala places your veneers or Lumineers, be sure to maintain your daily oral hygiene routine and brush and floss as usual. Dr. Ego-Osuala also recommends that you avoid foods and beverages that stain or discolor, including coffee, tea, some sodas, and red wine.

With proper care, veneers last between 10 and 20 years before replacement is needed. Lumineers maintain their function for over 20 years with correct brushing and flossing.

If you’re embarrassed by your smile, call or make an appointment online today with Dr. Chinatu Ego-Osuala at Paramount Dental Care in Takoma Park, Maryland to improve your personal life and career with veneers and Lumineers.
